Within this context, the civil society organization Stop Online Harm plays a critical role in the regional peacebuilding process for several key reasons: * Safeguarding "Truth" and Protecting Peacebuilders: IO and fake news campaigns in the region frequently target human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and community leaders to dismantle peace networks. Stop Online Harm serves as a digital shield, verifying, exposing, and debunking disinformation to ensure voices of truth are not drowned out by hate campaigns. * Intercepting the Vicious Cycle of Hate Speech: Online hostility between identity, religious, or ethnic groups often fuels the escalation of conflict from computer screens to real-world street violence. The organization's mission to monitor and counter these threats extinguishes the southern unrest at its root before it spreads. * Building Digital Resilience to Overcome Fear: Online harassment, such as threats, intimidation, and doxxing, aims to silence activists through fear. Be Safe & Be Seen: Combating Disinformation in Thailand's Southern Border Provinces Pattani, Sept. 5, 2026 — Stop Online Harm, in collaboration with the Southern Border Civil Society Council and Civic Women, convened a civil society panel discussion here to provide a platform for human rights defenders in the Deep South to share experiences regarding disinformation-based harassment. Stop Online Harm presented findings from investigations into coordinated disinformation campaigns targeting women human rights defenders, followed by an interactive session on prevalent attack vectors, including defamation, dehumanization, Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), and coordinated inauthentic behavior. The organization also introduced capacity-building frameworks for civil society safety, alongside digital toolkits designed to document violations and audit online intimidation.
